The Ales of Discworld

Generations of students at Unseen University have dabbled in the dark arts of brewing.  Find out more below or buy from Ales by Mail

Original Series

Bledlow’s Silence 5.5%

Nothing escapes the attention of Unseen University’s crack team of porters, the Bledlows. Fortunately plying them with a good solid (not in the Ankh river sense of the word) IPA has enabled the Boathouse Brewery to continue unhindered by Head Bledlow McAbre and his team.

Some have taken to carrying a small hip flask of Silence just in case. Others stumble upon the brewery on a daily basis….

Seen too much? Try a Bledlow’s

Tasting notes: A classic style IPA. Simcoe and Chinook hops work in perfect harmony in this brew giving a beautiful aroma of tropical citrus fruits and resinous pine. The flavour fills the mouth with this delightful aroma leading to intense grapefruit and a pleasing lingering bitterness

Modo’s Midden 4.5%

Dwarves are regarded as some of the best brewers on Discworld. Invited to try his hand at the Boathouse Brewery (as compensation for damage caused to the lawns), Unseen University’s head gardener, Modo, spent long hours in the brewhouse preparing and crafting his beer.

A steady stream of under gardeners arrived with ingredient-laden barrows, causing more than one student to wonder what exactly would emerge and whether the brewhouse would survive. The resulting beer serves as one of the finest examples of dwarven brewing excellence and Modo has been seen feeding his legendary compost heap with a bottle or three when it’s feeling a little flat.

Puts foliage on your chest!

Tasting notes: An honest, earthy and refreshing golden ale with a classic aroma of cedar and herbs. On the palate a light lemon/grapefruit flavour develops under the cedar for a truly distinctive character. The beer leaves a rounded taste in the mouth wanting you to take more.

Bugarup Blonde 4%

When visiting Unseen University on a cultural exchange (i.e. a pissup), Archchancellor Bill Rincewind didn’t take long to find his way into the Boathouse Brewery for a swift half.

Keen to learn the brewing techniques of Fourecks, the students encouraged Bill to brew with them and this collaboration beer was the result. Having heard of the interesting ingredients found in Fourecks beer they were surprised at the simplicity of the brew created by Bill and its wonderful flavours.

No worries, mate.

Tasting notes: A light refreshing blonde ale with a delicate bitterness making this a truly quaffable beer. Don’t be fooled, however; with the super high-alpha Stella, the aromas give sweet citrus and beautiful fruit. Fresh lemon and pine are present on the palate with delightful apricot and melon flavours hanging around in the background. The beer finally leaves a sweet but crisp hoppiness in the mouth.

Hix’s Darkside 7%

Professor of Post-Mortem Communications (definitely not a necromancer – gods, no!) John Hix was more of a pale ale chap in his youth, but with his elevation and reluctantly embraced status as the evil professor, he has turned his back on the paler beers in favour of a rich dark beast of a brew more befitting his new role.

Absolutely not brewed by Necromancy! No way, no siree!

Tasting notes: An aged oatmeal stout making the beer rounded yet robust. A complex malt character gives this beer a multitude of flavours trickling down the throat and lingering in the mouth. A smooth sweetness is felt on the palate from the abundance of oats poured in, giving this beer its style.

Heritage Collection

Black Hogswatch 3.7%

A tale is told of a black Hogswatch night When the Hogfather’s sledge pulled into sight No hog bells marked the stranger’s arrival All cowered and feared for their survival No bag full of toys or sausage surprise Just a black hooded robe and blue glowing eyes Strange were the gifts left in his stead
An elixir of dark ominous dread…”

Ridcully’s Revenge 5.0%

Creating a tipple for the demanding palate of Mustrum Ridcully, Unseen University’s Archchancellor, was never going to be easy.

When you’re dealing with a man who’s quick to grab a crossbow, the beer has to be perfect first time and every time. Thank the gods that the brewery was able to call upon the talented student brewers to create the perfect pint for quaffing after a busy day frustrating the Bursar.

Ridcully’s Revenge is a full strength mahogany coloured beer, which has a moreishness typical of a beer possessing the fine balance of pronounced hop bitterness & aroma against a natural malty sweetness, creating a deceivingly drinkable beer.

Nanny Ogg’s Scumble Cider 7.5%

Official Discworld Cider, Nanny Ogg’s Scumble is crafted in the Lancre marshes using a closely guarded receipe handed down through Ogg family generations. It contains mostly apples.

Brewed using the Lancre Blackheart apple (similar to the roundworld Russet and Cox apples) and an exotic mixture of secret ingredients, Nanny Ogg’s Scumble has the subtle taste of oak floorboards and the aroma of melting butter.

The juice is pressed from the fruit and allowed to naturally ferment with its own yeast and sugars for over 6 months.

Medium dry to the taste, “golden straw” in colour and suitable for vegetarians and coeliacs

WARNING: If at all possible avoid bringing Scumble into contact with water. If used for cleaning cutlery, one thimbleful of Scumble should be diluted in a bucket of water for best results, and to avoid dissolving the forks.

Always drink sensibly – do not allow Nanny Ogg’s Scumble to touch the lips or other sensitive areas.

Invalids Restorative 6.5%

A deep golden ale, brewed by golems who can resist the temptations of its strength. Matured in oakencasks used for aging Jimkin Bearhuggers finest dram.

The purest mountain spring water is shipped in from Llamedos and blended with floor malted barley, just adash of black malt and a blend of Progress and Pilgrim (hops rather than travellers).

The long oak aging imparts vanilla notes to the aroma, and the residual spirit lends a hefty kick to this splendid ale.

Jimkin Bearhuggers state of the art distillery is famed for producing whiskey in Ankh-Morpork. As HeadBrewer to the Assassins Guild their beer and ales are respected across Discworld.

Whiskey barrels are used for transporting the beer (they have plenty!) and this imparts a distinctive taste which, in true Bearhugger fashion, is aged for 8 minutes to keep up with the massive demand
